David Nemecek’s move to Simpson Thacher was publicly framed as an opportunity to lead the firm’s new Capital Structure Solutions Practice and help build out that platform. At the same time, reporting suggests his liability management practice at Kirkland had become increasingly conflicted with parts of the firm’s broader client base, particularly major private capital and asset manager clients affected by some of those mandates. In that sense, the move appears to have offered both a bigger leadership role and a cleaner platform for that practice.
